What I have noticed though, is at the back of the case, there is a silver tab that from what I can find is a drive temp sensor. So for some reason, any 2.5 inches drive I have tried in the tray system will not come up, mount, or even spool up (feel if it is spinning). The mac recognized the drive, and even let me attempt to boot into WINDOWS XP. I then grabbed a random windows XP 256 GB old-school 3.5-inch drive, and re did the test again. But all three of my test drives will come up if connect via USB. I grabbed another random 2.5 HHD from a windows machine, and nope no luck. And again neither of the 2.5 drives will appear if placed in the caddy system. I took the other 1tb drive and did all the testing again. I took one of the 2.5 drives and used it to mock up the adapter. The Mac mini came with 2 1TB harddrive set up in a raid to get 2TB back in the day (it came from apple this way). Originally the 2.5 drive i mentioned before, was taken from a 2013 Mac Mini. I am familiar with those drives and have read a number of people with that same issue. If you can help me or point me in the right direction that would be massively helpful. I’m not saying macs are stupid I love them. I have done this convert on windows pc dozens of time. I am not sure if there is some difference between a 2.5 drive compared to the 3.5 old drive outside the physical size of the drive. I can even boot from the usb mounted drive.

The Mac instantly noticed the drive, mounted it and even let me install the OS to the drive. I then went and grabbed a SATA to USB adapter and plugged it into the External USB on the case.
I then put the computer on its side, and manually placed the new drive into the tray port and made sure it was secure/supported to avoid any damage to the port. Thinking the adapter plate was not lined up correctly, i took the HDD out of the adapter. I took out the drive, and moved the OS HDD to the same slot and rebooted the Mac. I installed the new 2.5” 1TB HDD (with adapter) into the tray and installed it into the Mac (Bay 2).īut the Mac does not even recognize the drive.
